SmartPoints Calculation

The Smart Points calculation is was introduced in 2015. In January 2018, Weight Watchers introduced their FreeStyle plan. This program still used the SmartPoints and the calculation did not change. Read this article to learn more about the freestyle program.

Next WW introduced the MyWW plan in 2019/2020, making the points a bit more personalized. This plan also used the Smart Points calculation. The MyWW plan introduced the Blue, Green and Purple plans. You and learn more about the MyWW plan.

With the Freestyle plan you have a host of zero points foods. You can see the full list of freestyle zero points foods here.

With the introduction of the MyWW plan, there were 3 separate lists of zero points foods. You can find these zero point foods for the MyWW plans (green, blue and purple) here.

Smart Points Calculation for Food

With the Smart Points, the calculation and the nutrition values used changed from the points plus method.

As always, Weight Watcher's plan helps us to make lifelong changes in the way we eat and exercise. With this in mind, the new calculation once again helped guide us towards the right foods to help us stay healthy.

The SmartPoints method of calculating food values includes using the following nutritional values;

  • Calories
  • Saturated Fat
  • Sugar
  • Protein
junk food

The value, or weight, given to each of these factors varies. For instance, saturated fat has a higher value in the calculation than calories. Sugar also will cause a higher point value as it is given a larger factor than calories as well.

Protein on the other hand will help reduce the points value using the Smart Points calculation. So the higher the protein in food, the lower the points value will be.

A food item can have the same value for calories and protein, but if the sugars or saturated fat are higher in one item versus the other, the points value will be higher. Giving each nutritional item different values in the calculation will help guide us to the healthier food item even though both have the same amount of calories.

Without futher ado, here is the Smart Points calculation.

Smart Points Food Value Calculation

(Calories * .0305) + (Sat Fat * .275) + (Sugar * .12) - (Protein * .098)

So if your food item has 150 calories, 1 gram of saturated fat, 5 grams of sugars and 9 grams of protein, then the Smart Points value would be;

(150 * .0305) + (1 * .275) + (5 * .12) - (9 * .098) = 4.575 + .275 + .6 - .882 = 4.568 which is rounded to the whole value of 5.

Now that you understand how it's calculated and what nutritional value impacts the number, you can make smarter food choices when following the WW Smart Points plan.

Points Plus Calculation

As stated above, the new points plus calculation does not use calories at all. Instead it uses total fat, carbohydrates, protein and dietary fiber.

nutrition label

The value, or weight, given to each of these nutritional factors varies. For instance, total fat has a higher value given than dietary fiber.

So an item can have the same values for carbs, protein and fiber, but if one is higher in fat, that item will have a higher points plus value.

Below is the formula for the Points Plus Weight Watchers Point Calculator. The formula shows the factors given to each of the nutrient values used.

Points Plus Food Value Calculation

(Fat (g) / 3.8889) + (Carbohydrate (g) / 9.2105) + (Protein (g) / 10.9375) - (Fiber (g) / 12.5)

For this example, let's use 3 grams of fat, 16 grams of carbs, 9 grams of protein and 3 grams of fiber. Using these values, the calculation would be;

(3 / 3.8889) + (16 / 9.2105) + (9 / 10.9375) - (3 / 12.5) = .77 + 1.74 + .82 - .24 = 3.09 which is rounded to the whole value of 3.

As you can see with the Weight Watchers Points calculator for the Plus plan, using multiple nutrition values helps guide you towards healthier, fiber rich foods.

Original Points Calculation

The old method used for the Weight Watchers Points calculator uses calories, fat and fiber in the calculation. As shown above in the calculator, fiber is limited to four grams only.

Any fiber above 4 grams is not considered in the calculation. With this method, no consideration was given for carb or protein content.

With any further ado, here is the formula;

(calories / 50) + (fat(g) / 12) - (fiber(g) / 5)

For this calculation, let's use 275 calories, 4 grams of fat and 3 grams of fiber. Using these values, the calculation would be;

(275 / 50) + (4 / 12) - (3 / 5) = 5.5 + .33 - .6 = 5.23 which is rounded to the whole value of 5.

As you can see, the Weight Watchers Points calculators have evolved over time as they learn more about how foods, and their nutritional values, can impact our weight loss journey. As I've always said, the more you know, the better decisions you can make.
